New Sunscreen Recommendations For Los Angeles Infants Babies love to be outdoors on a sunny South Gate day, but a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that changes in the skin that lead to skin cancer may actually occur in a person’s first year. However, sunscreen is not recommended for Los Angeles children under six months of age. What’s a parent to do?

South Gate parents should be aware that infants have a much higher body surface to volume ratio than adults. Because of this, babies absorb much more of the chemicals in the sunscreen.

In addition, younger babies don’t sweat as efficiently as those older, so they are at greater risk of becoming dehydrated, and sunscreen can impair effective cooling by perspiration.

South Gate parents should dress infants in protective clothing and hats and keep them in the shade. If needed, a little sunscreen can be used on the face and hands, where sunburns often occur in young South Gate children.

AAP Immunization Information For Lawndale Parents In the past century, the rates of many serious diseases in the United States have significantly declined, in some cases, they have been virtually eradicated.

Many Lawndale people have never met a person with measles, polio, small pox, rubella, tetanus, or diphtheria; though these diseases killed thousands of California children in past generations.

One of the main reasons many dangerous communicable childhood diseases have been minimized in our area is due to South Gate children’s immunizations. The increase in immunization use has gone a long way to improve health in our California communities.

Health Benefits of Los Angeles Dirt!

Most Los Angeles parents know about the health benefits of gardening as a family: spending time outdoors, working together, establishing a connection to the food we eat, better nutrition, and many more.

Something not so well known in Los Angeles is that the dirt itself contains beneficial bacteria that can aid in depression, cognitive functioning, and even in fighting some cancers.

Working with soil in Los Angeles – digging, pulling weeds, harvesting vegetables – exposes California kids and parents to a strain of bacteria called mycobacterium vaccae. Recent research reveals that m. vaccae triggers the release of seratonin, which can elevate mood and reduce stress.

In one study, two groups of mice were fed peanut butter sandwiches before finding their way through a difficult maze. One of the groups had m. vaccae spread on the sandwiches. The mice that ingested the bacteria ran the maze twice as fast and exhibited half as many stress behaviors as the mice that didn’t have the bacteria.

Think of Los Angeles kids in the ‘good ole’ days,’ running around on unpaved roads, playing in meadows, forests, and dirt piles, and half of the time probably bare-foot. It is quite a different childhood than the sanitized version that exists in our society today. Children not only need more time out-of-doors, but they need to get dirty! Let your Los Angeles neighbors hear you yell: ‘Kids, go outside and get dirty!’

Inglewood, Torrance, and Lawndale parents may do themselves and their children a favor by adding to their kids’ emotional, physical, and intellectual health by letting them play in the dirt!

As a parent of active Los Angeles children, I’m sure you’re always on the lookout for places where germs lurk, and you probably know that toothbrushes have the potential to grow a lot of bacteria. However, there are some simple rules you can follow in your Lawndale area home to keep your child’s toothbrush (and your kid’s mouth) as healthy as possible.

One of the best ways to limit bacterial growth on a toothbrush is to allow it to dry completely between uses. This is best done by storing the toothbrush in a toothbrush holder on the counter, not tucked away in a drawer where air flow is limited.

A toothbrush holder is superior to a cup because it’s important that neighboring toothbrushes don’t touch and share germs.

Air drying toothbrushes is easy when you purchase two for each child at your nearest South Gate drugstore. Teach your kids to alternate between the two so they each have more time to dry out all the way.

Toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months, mainly because normal wear and tear will make them less effective at cleaning teeth. But, regardless of the age of the toothbrush, replace it after your child has a cold or other illness.

Hello! Welcome to the Los Angeles children’s health blog. I am Acai Chocolate Connoisseur Adam Paul Green. At this site, I publish information on nutrition and health issues that affect Los Angeles children and families. My goal is to improve the state of children’s health in the South Gate area.

Despite decades of increased awareness in South Gate about the dangers of a distorted body image and extreme dieting, eating disorders are still a serious problem.

A recent American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) study revealed disturbing facts about eating disorders among children.1 According to the report, 0.5 percent of teenage girls in the country are estimated to have anorexia. The bulimia rate among adolescent girls is estimated at more than double that at 1 to 2 percent. Though anorexia and bulimia are usually thought of as a problem for adolescents, Los Angeles parents should be aware that even young South Gate children are at risk, as well as males, though the rates are lower.

California pediatricians can help Los Angeles parents with children affected by an eating disorder. The AAP recommends a combination approach for the treatment of eating disorders in children. Treatment plans usually include nutritional guidance and psychiatric counseling along with the appropriate medical care.

Hello Torrance! Welcome to my children’s health blog. I am a concerned parent and advocate for improved children’s health in the Torrance area.

Today’s topic is energy drinks. Many Torrance teens are under the false impression that energy drinks like Rock Star and Red Bull are similar to sports drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade.

Energy drinks are completely different from electrolyte replacement drinks and we need to help our children understand the health risks they pose. Energy drinks contain dangerous chemicals that can harm kid’s growing bodies, especially their teeth.

Energy drinks contain citric acid, fruit juices and extracts, sugar, and a dangerous chemical that gives them their bright color. They can damage tooth enamel with prolonged use.

Though South Gate children come in all shapes and sizes and grow at widely varying rates, sometimes an extremely low weight indicates a medical condition called ‘failure to thrive.’

This general term is used for children who weigh significantly less than other healthy South Gate kids their age.

According to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, in cases of children with failure to thrive the rate of weight and height gain ‘may be more important than actual measurements.’ 1
